INTRODUCTION TO DRAWING

with Miranda Free

Sunday 5th September 2010

9:00 am to 3:00 pm

Cost:  $120.00

The ability to draw is closely related to the ability to ‘see’. While most of us are quite sure that we ‘see’ perfectly well, the way vision operates in day to day life is different from the way artists ‘see’ in order to draw with a degree of accuracy. Learning to draw is more about learning how artists see and perceive the world than learning special drawing techniques or manual dexterity (these aspects will be also be explored).

For this introductory workshop we will work through several drawing exercises, some using charcoal and others using pencil. The ideas and strategies presented can be used for any genre, however, in this workshop we will be focusing on still life drawing.

INTRODUCTION TO
SUMI-E JAPANESE PAINTING

with
Ann-Marie Granger

Fortnightly classes (5 per term)

Cost:  $125 per term

Contact the Gallery for further information

Phone:  (08) 3379 7828

The Secrets of The Ancient Art of Sumi-e Revealed

Sumi-e, the Japanese word for brush painting or ink picture. This form of art dates back before the sixth century when it was passed on from China to the Zen Buddhist Priests, scholars and artists of Japan and was initially used as a Zen exercise.

The beautiful brush work eventually made it's way across Europe. Around 1867 Sumi-e and wood block prints from Japan had an influence on the impressionists such as Degas, Manet and Lautrec.

Today, as a changing curriculum of schools in Japan and other Asian countries forces this once essential subject to be eliminated, new ways of passing on the art have emerged. With a small group of qualified teachers around the globe, classes are becoming increasingly popular, and students can now learn Sumi-e using the traditional methods.

During the two hour classes Ann-Marie will guide you through the ancient art of Japanese Sumi-e Painting.

Sumi-e is a style of painting that is characteristically Asian and has been practised for well over a thousand years.
It is a graceful, contemplative form of painting, enjoyable both to view and to create.

9:00 am to 3:00 pm

  • Roll of paper towel

  • Soft, absorbent cloth for 'clean up' x 4

  • Photograph or magazine clipping that appeals to you
