African Functional Art in Sherwood

Carrol Boyes in South Africa and Lee O’Connor in Sherwood Australia share a love of art and entrepreneurship, and have formed a business alliance.

Carrol Boyes, artist, heads Carrol Boyes Functional Art, which specializes in innovative, contemporary designs for the kitchen and home, and produces a variety of distinctive and uniquely South African items that are both useful and beautiful to own.

Ms Boyes has grown her company rapidly from its humble beginnings in 1989, and now employs more than 300 craftsmen and women near Tzaneen in the Northern Province, South Africa. Customers include Nelson Mandela, Madonna, Sir Elton John and Sting, amongst others.

Lee O’Connor heads the award-winning Lilly-Lee Gallery and Studios in the unique artisans’ laneway that forms a cultural hub in Sherwood, and was selected by the South African company to exclusively stock their pewter range of products (pictured) in Brisbane.

Ms O’Connor states, “To actively participate in the distribution of unique quality functional art pieces and so support an enterprise that provides employment in a struggling African country is an honour.”
